National Weather Service confirms EF-1 tornado hit Ocala neighborhoods

The buzz of chainsaws was a common sight and sound in Ocala's Palm Cay neighborhood Tuesday morning. It was the day after a tornado tore through.

Bill Kuhns, of Ocala, whose home was badly damaged by the tornado, said, "It was like a war going on outside. But, it only lasted two minutes."

Kuhns and his wife were both inside their living room when a large tree came crashing through their patio, causing tens of thousands of dollars in damage.

"Then, all of a sudden, we heard little things hitting the house," Kuhns said. "So, we both ran like hell to the hallway."

SkyFox showed much of the destruction Tuesday morning. The National Weather Service confirms an EF 1 tornado ripped through the area Monday night, with winds of 70-90 miles per hour.

Pete Wolf, with the National Weather Service, estimates a path of destruction two miles long and about 1,000 feet wide through the Palm Cay and Oak Run subdivisions.

The home of John Mejic, of Ocala, was also damaged by the storm.

"Oh, is that right?" He said in surprise, after Fox 35 reporter David Williams told him about the confirmed tornado touchdown. "Now, that would scare the devil out of me."

The Marion County Sheriff's Office estimates more than 60 homes are damaged and seven are uninhabitable.

The tornado caused thousands of dollars in damage to Mejic and his wife's home. They were inside their home when the tornado hit. Mejic said it was here, then gone in minutes.

"Wife and I have been through several hurricanes," he said. "It was nothing like it. This was terrible. This made a hurricane look like a Sunday walk."

The Marion County Sheriff's Office said they are out helping residents. We're also told neighbors are helping other neighbors by offering displaced people places to stay.

If you were affected by Monday night's tornado and need non-emergency help, you can call Marion County Emergency Management at 352-369-8100.
