Demolition of Tinker Field begins

The City of Orlando began removing the grandstands from historic Tinker Field on Tuesday.

Named after Chicago Cubs Hall of Famer Joe Tinker, the ballpark opened in 1923 and later hosted players such as Babe Ruth and Jackie Robinson.  Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. also delivered a speech at the site in 1964.

The recent expansion of the Citrus Bowl requires additional parking spaces, according to planners, and the field had become unsuitable for baseball without additional spending to upgrade the site.

The city says it will develop a historic marker for the site which will commemorate important events and the historic people who have visited Tinker Field throughout the decades.
