The security guard is expected to be ok but the burglar is still on the run. Employees at the Daytona Flea and Farmers Market told Fox 35 they were heartbroken after learning that one of their own stabbed in the stomach after he was just doing his job.
"I was very sad and I was shocked. I was really shocked, I didn't expect that," said Patricia Goode who works at the flea market.
Patricia Goode says she's good friends with her coworker and the security guard who was stabbed. His name is Jason Powell.
"He's very reliable, a nice guy, and he's just awesome," Goode stated. "It is sad, I can't believe somebody would do that."
In fact, everyone who works here say they're like a family. Goode says she's been working here for nearly a decade and Powell has been here longer than her. That's why employees at the farmers market hope Volusia County deputies will catch the burglar.
Fox 35 saw a deputy patrolling the area Saturday morning after last night's break-in. According to deputies, the 36 year old security guard was doing his usual rounds but around 11:30pm he spotted a man breaking inside.
Deputies say Jason Powell chased the burglar towards the north fence, they got into a scuffle, and then the man stabbed Powell in the stomach with a knife, and took off running. Several other security guards told deputies they heard a car pull into the entrance of the flea market, and then backed out quickly driving westbound on Bellevue Avenue.
As for the security guard, he's in stable condition at the hospital. If you have any information about this case, call the Volusia County Sheriff's Office.
