High school students get culinary experience at Universal Studios

Orange County high school students got a little taste of what it takes to be a chef.

Orange county public schools partnered with Universal Orlando Resort to go behind the scenes and explore culinary-related careers.

If you want to be a good chef it takes a little more than adding a dash of fresh pepper to your dish. That's what the head chef of Universal Orlando Resort Steven Jayson tried to explain to students during the new culinary career exploration event.

"We feed thousands of people. We have people from all over the world that come here so we try to build menus and incorporate menus that will satisfy all the guests that come," said Universal Head Chef Steven Jayson.

One hundred students from Colonial and Wekiva high schools toured the restaurants at Universal Orlando Resort. They learned from top chefs all about the ins and outs of the business. It's part of Universal's new "culinary career exploration."

"What we're trying to show the students today is the complexity and the simplicity of what we have here so that they can see it and see if it might be something they want to do as a career," said Jayson.

It's already inspired some students put their passion of food into a career.

"It's fun and it's very interesting," said a Wekiva 9th grader Alex Ferguson. "Me and my friend are already talking about working here but they told us we have to wait 3 years, until we're 18."

"At home I'm always in the kitchen so I was like why not use that in the school and this program opened up," said Wekiva 10th grader Shantell McFarlane.

It's the first time Universal is giving students hands on experience in the culinary world. Students hope the program will become an annual event so others can enjoy it.

"It's fun! I love food and I love learning about different types of food and how to prepare foods and where they come from," said Wekiva 10th grader Summara Jones.
