ORLANDO, FL— More and more adults are getting orthodontic treatment hoping to achieve that perfect smile. But adults don’t want to get the traditional metal braces; they’re opting for clear aligners, like Invisalign or porcelain braces. The perfect smile has been a life changer for many it’s not for everyone.
Milly Vazquez is one of many adults who never got around fixing their teeth.
“I’ve always wanted braces since I was a little girl,” said Milly Vazquez. She says as she got older she became more self-conscious about her gap. “Instead of people looking at my eyes they were looking at my teeth.”
She soon learned about a fantastic way to close her gab without bringing anymore unwanted attention to her teeth. In July, Milly’s husband came to see Doctor Aileen Trivedi because he wanted to fix his teeth too.
“He gave me a piece of paper and he said you’re dream is going to come true, you’re going to get the smile you always wanted,” she said with a big smile on her face.
Dr. Trivedi says she sees more adults seeking clear aligners, especially men.
“(Invisalign) really has the best technology behind it,” said Dr. Trivedi owner of Fine Dentistry of Downtown Orlando.
According to the American Dental Association more than a million adults received orthodontic treatment just in 2012 alone; that’s up nearly 40-percent from the mid-90s. But it does not come cheap. The American Dental Association says adults typically pay between $4,000 to $7,000 and it's not for everyone. Dr. Trivedi says it's harder to give an adult that perfect TV smile after decades of dental work.
“One of the most important things before starting orthodontics is making sure no gum disease is present. The gums have to be healthy so seeing a general dentist and making sure everything is the way it’s supposed to be,” said Dr. Trivedi.
Dr. Trivedi says having straighter teeth are not only for cosmetics, it’s better for your health.
“You see such an improvement in oral hygiene. Patients make this big investment in their teeth and now they care about keeping their gums healthy and they’re flossing more and brushing correctly so it’s very rewarding for me to see that,” she told us.
And for Vazquez, perfectly aligned teeth have literally changed her life.
“I notice now when I eat my bite is a lot better, I’m not grinding my teeth the way I used to,” Vazquez stated. “My confidence has definitely gotten better. My youngest son tells me that I smile a lot more now!”
In just a matter of a few months this busy 41 year old mom says she’s noticed a big difference in her gap, it’s getting smaller! So she can’t stop smiling!
“I’m super excited! I’m going to have my $1,000 white smile for the summer so I’m excited!”
