Third teen appears before judge in Trindade death case

- The third teen accused in the beating death of a 15-year old in Winter Park appeared before a judge Friday.

Jesse Sutherland, 15, was arrested in Virginia but has since been brought back to Florida.  He is charged with manslaughter in the beating death of Roger Trindade, a Brazilian student who was going to Winter Park High School.  Two other teens are also charged in the case.

Trindade was found unconscious near Park Avenue in Winter Park in mid-October. His injuries were too severe to survive.

On Friday, the state asked that Sutherland be kept in custody for an additional nine days as they prepare to go to trial.  The prosecutor claimed that Sutherland had a key role in the crime.

“The allegations are that Jesse Sutherland is the person who actually punched Roger Trindade in the face with such force that he knocked him to the ground. When he was on the ground flinching, he then spat on him,” she said.

Prosecutors also say Sutherland bragged to his friends about the knockout punch.

The judge sided with the state – allowing the nine additional days in custody bringing it to the 30 days total.
Sutherland’s dad declined to comment.
