Woman struck by tires while loading groceries in Merritt Island

A woman suffered serious injuries while loading groceries into her car after being struck with a set of tires that spun off a dump truck, according to Florida Highway Patrol.

A dump truck hauling hurricane debris was traveling northbound on Courtenay Parkway in Merritt Island Thursday afternoon. According to a press release, a woman was attempting to put groceries into the back of her car, which was parked at Gatto’s Tire Store.

The axle broke on the dump truck, causing two tandem tires to fly off the truck and travel across the road, according to the press release. The tires struck the woman and the back of her car.

The woman was airlifted to Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne.

The crash remains under investigation.
