Volusia County cemetery suffering from sinking graves

- A cemetery in Volusia County is lying in ruins with dozens of veterans' graves sinking further into the ground. Now one local veteran is doing his best to try and clean things up.

There are about 2500 people buried at DeLand's "Union Cemetery" including 200 veterans, but about 50 of those graves are sinking into the ground. That is why Dan Friend is trying to fix them.

Friend is also enlisting some volunteers to help, but it won't be easy. Not only does the group say there's no plot map, but they also say the grave markers that do exist are deteriorating leaving them guessing on who is buried where.

"We're losing them and we cannot allow that to happen," said volunteer Shawn Fox. "These are men that fought and died, whether they died in the war or came home and died, they sacrificed for their country."

The group is hoping to get help from county leaders to try and make Union Cemetery more respectable.
