NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla (WOFL FOX 35) - Turtle nesting season gets underway in March and wildlife officials have a new warning this year. Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation are asking people to put away their cell phones.
The camera flashes can scare or disorient the turtles which could cause the turtles to go back into the water without laying any eggs.
Officials have emphasized keeping lights away from the turtles, but because of the overwhelming prevalence of cell phones the warning is not to be taken lightly.
From March 1st to the end of October thousands of sea turtles will land on Florida beaches to lay their eggs. To help protect the turtles the FWC recommends people stay far away from them, to avoid shining any lights on them, and if you see any holes on the beach, to fill them.
