ORLANDO, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - Hundreds of people lined up at an Orlando attorney’s office to pick up free turkeys Tuesday morning. It’s part of The Pendas Law Firm’s annual “Turkey Giveaway for Families in Need.”
This is the 8th year the firm has given away 1,000 turkeys in Orlando. The firm also gave away 1,000 turkeys in Fort Myers, Jacksonville and Tampa. “If you line up at 8 o'clock the night before and wait 12 hours overnight in 40-degree weather you need a turkey,” said Lou Pendas, founder of The Pendas Law Firm.
Mario Kee lined up Monday at 8 p.m. for the turkey giveaway that started the next day, Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. By Tuesday at 5 a.m. the line wrapped around 3 blocks from the law firm. "Times are hard, and I just wanted to come and make dinner for my family,” said Erica, who was in line 7 hours before they started the turkey giveaway.
So many told us they felt thankful to the Pendas Law Firm. We caught one woman in tears after receiving her turkey. "I'm just so excited and thanked him for being here for us, I'm very thankful,” she told us.
One turkey could feed a family of four. The firm gave away 12 to 15 pound Butterball turkeys. “They're amazing they really give back, so very kind and nice and they're very giving,” said Valeria who was in line since midnight.
"The need is still great, every year the economy gets a bit better and you would think the lines would get shorter but unfortunately they simply don't. Now we probably got 4 blocks worth of people waiting in line for turkey,” said Lou Pendas.
Everyone told us despite the wait, the cold weather, and the long lines all worth it. "I’m very thankful to Pendas that he can give it to the needy,” Erica told us.
