Sanford Police investigate deadly apartment shooting

- Sanford Police have one person in custody in connection to a double shooting that happened Wednesday night at the Kensington Oaks Apartment complex on Mellonville Avenue.

"It was a house full of kids and if they saw that, that's horrible,” said a neighbor who just went by the name Gaby.

She lives right next door where the shooting happened. It was around 10:30 p.m. when she says her boyfriend called 911 after he heard kids screaming next door.

"There was a lot of commotion gong on next door and he called 911 because he heard somebody saying they got shot, somebody is dead,” the neighbor stated.

When police arrived they found 24-year-old Whitnet McCloud with a gunshot to her hand.  A man, 24-year-old Marquis Grooms, was dead from his gunshot wounds. Investigators spent the night and early morning collecting evidence then 8 hours after the shooting there was a break in the case. Police say the suspect 22-year-old Tonney McCants, walked through the Sanford Police Station doors and turned himself in.

"Approximately 6:30 this morning he turned himself in to investigators here at Sanford Police Department, so we do have him in custody at this time," said the Sanford Police spokeswoman Bianca Gillett. “We do know the victims and the suspect were known to each other but that's all the information we're releasing."

Police say McCants is facing multiple charges including murder. This is an ongoing investigation.
