SANFORD, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - Mayor Jeff Triplett of Sanford says it is time to get back to work and back to the business after being carjacked at gunpoint early Saturday morning just blocks from downtown.
"I hate it for what's happened and the city of Sanford and the media that it's taken on, but it is something we need to be weary of," Triplett said. "We need to pay attention to our surroundings; we don't live in a bubble society. There are bad people out there."
Sanford Police have arrested 17-year-old Jermine Horne and 18-year-old Demarcus Paige for the crime, and say a 3rd suspect is still on the loose. Mayor Triplett described for us what it felt like to finally be at home and kiss his children after an ordeal that had him fearing for his life.
"The range of emotions when I kissed my sons on the forehead. You know they were curled up and you know sleeping and it's just, you know, kind that beautiful moment of you think back and 'did I kiss them before they went to bed? When was the last time I talked to them? What was the last conversation?' and you sit back and reflect on that. It'll never, if it ever happened before, it won't happen again that I don't say I love them and kiss them good night, each one of them."
Triplett says even though the pair are teenagers, he plans to see the case through.
"I plan on doing everything I can, within my powers to prosecute these two to the full extent of the law."
