Police weapon, ammo stolen from unmarked SUV

- The Lake County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after a Howey-In-The-Hills police officer’s SUV was broken into and a gun was stolen.
“Anytime a firearm is stolen from anybody it’s concerning, but especially so when it’s from a police car,” said Lake County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Jim Vachon.

Investigators say the stolen rifle is an M16-A2.

They say loaded magazines and tactical vests that say “police” were also taken.

Lake County deputies say the unmarked SUV was locked and parked at the officer’s home when it was burglarized.

According to investigators, someone busted a window to get in.

Vachon says it was the only car break-in in the area overnight.

“It’s so early on, we don’t know if it was a targeted burglary or if it was sheer luck that it happened to be a police car,” he said.

Howey-In-The-Hills Police say the rifle was in a soft case and stored according to agency policy.

Deputies say the officer lives in an unincorporated area of Tavares.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crimeline at 1-800-423-TIPS.
