Orlando Police officer dies in cancer battle

- Karen Long, 41, was first diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer in 2007.

Doctors treated it aggressively, but it returned in 2012 as Stage 4.

Last December, her diagnosis took another turn.

Her cancer had come back and spread to her lungs and liver.

In March, Long and her friends, family and coworkers from the Orlando Police Department held a fundraiser for her third round of treatement.

The mother of two was with OPD since 2000.

During her 15 years on the force, she was a patrol officer, worked with the special victims unit and also as a school resource officer, taking part in the department's annual "Shop with a Cop" event.

Long last served as a master police officer in OPD's Community Involvement Division.

Chief John Mina released this statement:

"The Orlando Police Department is deeply saddened by the loss of Master Police Officer Karen Long. She was a beautiful person, great mom and wife, and faithful servant and protector of this community. May our warrior rest in peace."

Long is survived by her husband and two children.
