Officials investigating fire at vacant YMCA set to become mosque

The State Fire Marshal’s Office is now investigating a fire at a vacant YMCA building that was set to be a mosque.
The fire happened at the former YMCA on Derbyshire Road, west of Nova Road in Daytona Beach.
Dr. Saud Sulayman of the Islamic Center of Daytona Beach says the group purchased the building 7 years ago and had just gotten city approval in October to convert it to a mosque and community center but now those plans are set back.
Officials say the damage was mostly confined to one room.
Officials say they are not investigating this as a hate crime at this time.
The Florida Council on American Islamic Relations released a statement saying in part, "With the heightened anti-Islamic rhetoric and Islamophobic hate crimes on the rise, CAIR FL is taking this incident very seriously.”
