MELBOURNE, Fla. - Melbourne police say they have arrested Octavius Merrill Weaver after a car chase that left one officer injured and ended in a rollover crash.
Police say that a truck was reported stolen from Rockledge Police Department Sunday night.
Melbourne police spotted the stolen truck around 1:00 a.m. Monday.
Police attempted to stop the vehicle near Lipscomb Street and University Boulevard.
Police say that the truck didn’t stop and sped away towards U.S. 1.
Police then deployed stop sticks to try to stop the truck.
The suspect changed lanes to avoid the stop sticks and ran directly into an officer, police say.
After hitting the officer, the suspect didn’t stop and continued west on Brevard Drive near Babcock Street where officers had to use the pursuit intervention technique, aka the “PIT” maneuver, to stop the truck.
The maneuver worked and the vehicle spun around a rolled over.
Two people were inside the truck when it crashed, police say.
They were taken to Holmes Regional Medical center to get checked out, along with the officer who had been hit.
The driver was checked out at the hospital and then released to MPD for arrest.
He was identified as 26-year-old Octavius Merrill Weaver of Cocoa.
He is charged with attempted murder on a law enforcement officer, fleeing, reckless driving, and driving on a suspended license.
Officers also found two guns inside the vehicle.
