Off-duty OPD officer stops shoplifting suspect

- An off-duty Orlando Police officer jumped into action to chase down several shoplifting suspects in a high-speed pursuit Sunday.

The incident occurred in Ocoee when police say David McKinnon was not in uniform and was in his personal vehicle when he saw four suspects running out of a Best Buy with what looked like stolen property.

According to our news partners at the Orlando Sentinel, McKinnon chased after them, at times going more than 90 miles per hour.

The suspects eventually crashed into another vehicle after running a red light at State Road 408 and Hiawassee Road where McKinnon had detained the driver. "I confronted the driver and told him to stop and he didn't comply so to keep him from getting away I got out and tackled him and put him on the ground," McKinnon explained. "Some citizens came out and saw the struggle and we got them zip-tied until marked units got here. I didn't like getting out not being armed or anything at this point, go figure, but that dude was not going to get away based on the accident he just created a couple blocks south of us," McKinnon said.

Another suspect was later arrested. Two others got away.
