Murder victim's grandson arrested

Cory Steplight’s rap sheet already included a list of felonies.

The 25-year-old's latest crime didn’t just return him to jail, it led to his grandmother’s murder, according to and Orange County Sheriff’s Office arrest warrant.

Steplight appeared before a judge at the Orange County Jail Friday on a charge of attempted murder.
According to the warrant, Steplight fought with Billy Derossier on Saturday in the neighborhood near 24th Street and Rio Grande Ave.

In the course of that fight, Steplight allegedly pulled a gun and shot Derossier and three other people.
Investigators say Derossier later went looking for Steplight in the 1700 block of 24th Street.  Not finding Steplight, Derossier allegedly found Steplight’s 14-year-old cousin outside a home, shot her in the leg, then went inside and shot and killed 83-year-old Ruby Steplight in her kitchen.

Derossier was arrested for murder later that day.

A warrant for Cory Steplight’s arrest was issued the next day, but cops didn’t track him down until Thursday.  On Friday morning, a judge set his bond at $500,000.
