Memorial grows outside Kissimmee Police Dept. for fallen officers

- Cathy Ellis decided to come say goodbye with flowers for Kissimmee police officers Matthew Baxter and Sgt. Richard "Sam" Howard.

She doesn't know them, but she's overcome with grief.

They were doing their jobs, and they were shot in cold blood," Ellis said. "I don't understand. I want God to give me some answers. I don't understand. I'm so lost for their families."

Both husbands, both fathers.

Officer Baxter, 27, was a father of four and married to another Kissimmee police officer.

He was recently highlighted by the department for spending time with children in the neighborhood and making a difference.

Sgt. Sam Howard, 36, was a 10-year KPD veteran. He was married with one child.

"They were the epitome of what you ask for in officers," said Kissimmee Police Chief Jeff O'Dell.

Luis Seich says Sgt. Howard helped in his son's battle with cancer.

"He was over there consoling him to get better, and he did too," Seich said.

Now, he's dealing with even more tragedy.

"It hurts with him passing away, with Matthew passing away and Sam not doing too good," Seich said. "I just hope he gets better."

Tweets and condolences for KPD and the officers' families are coming in from San Diego, Chicago, D.C. and here in Central Florida.

"My heart just breaks for them," said Kathleen Rider, another person coming to pay her respects to the fallen officers.
