SANFORD, Fla (WOFL FOX 35) - The Mayor of DeBary is putting his raft-building skills to the test before trying to row from Cuba to Florida. On Thursday morning Mayor Clint Johnson was at Lake Monroe in Sanford for a trial run, but ran into a few issues.
On his homemade raft one of his bolts that holds the oar broke off so he had to use wire to fix it. He plans on going to Cuba next month before floating back to the United States on a raft he will build.
Havana Sun, a sunscreen company, is sponsoring his journey and paying for his trip to fly to Cuba. Once there he will build his raft in Cuba using four 55 gallon barrels held together with a few pieces of 2x4's and rope. He also plans on using some pipes to paddle around 90 miles from Cuba to Key West.
However the U.S. Coast Guard is urging the mayor to reconsider his plans to float back from Cuba on a raft warning that it could have grave consequences.
Despite the Coast Guard's attempt to deter Mayor Johnson, he's says he's committed. "There's no law that prevents an American coming home on a boat. It's a smaller sailboat for lack of a definition. I'm doing this trip; its something when I put my mind to its something I don't give up on until I achieve it.
