WINTER PARK, Fla (WOFL FOX 35) - A van slammed into a man walking down a sidewalk in Winter Park Thursday night. Florida troopers say the victim was hit by the van near the intersection of 436 and Aloma Avenue around 9 p.m.
Investigators still don't know why the van jumped the sidewalk, but say it kept on going after knocking the man to the ground. The van finally stopped when it slammed into a sign and a fire hydrant, flipping the vehicle onto its roof.
One eye witness claims the victim actually got hit while saving his girlfriend from getting run over. ""I got out of my car and saw a young man with a very serious head injury and a broken leg talking to his girlfriend," said eye witness Bill Hoefer. "He had pushed her out of the way and was hit by the car himself."
Authorities have identified the driver as 34-year-old Luke Hiatt of Orlando and the victim as 31-year old Jeffrey Smith of Orlando. Both have been taken to nearby hospitals and are being treated for serious injuries.
As of Friday morning charges are pending against the driver of the van. We will update this story when more information becomes available.
