Man killed, innocent bystander injured after shooting in Pine Hills

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after a man was killed and a bystander was hurt after a shooting in Pine Hills Saturday.

Deputies were called to Powers Drive near Silver Star Road just before 2:30 p.m.

Investigators say after shots were fired in the parking lot of a Kwik Stop, the victim backed away in his car, crossing Powers Drive and into a shopping center parking lot.

“The vehicle that's fleeing the gunfire ends up hitting a woman who was putting groceries in her car, either he hit the woman or he hit a car that hit the woman,” said Orange County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Jeff Williamson.

He says the woman was hurt, but is expected to survive. The shooting victim was taken to the hospital where he later died.

With a homicide investigation underway, detectives were on the scene for hours taking photos, collecting evidence and looking at the victim’s car.

We’re told surveillance video may also help with the case.

Investigators are still trying to track down the person responsible. No information about the shooting victim or a motive has been released.

The deadly afternoon comes just one day after city and county leaders talked about the ways they are trying to stop the violence in Pine Hills.
