LAKE COUNTY, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - The man who admits to opening fire on the Florida Turnpike over the weekend told reporters Monday that he thought someone was firing at him.
Kwanza Donald said he had been driving from Houston to Florida because had heard that his mother had been killed.
He said he was tired and disoriented when he fired at a red Chevy Impala with a man and a teenaged girl inside.
“I thought I was still in Houston, Texas because Texas is so big,” he said.
Donald said he had been in Houston training to be a truck driver and while he was there he attracted the attention of gang members who were trying to kill him.
He later told reporters he was in Georgia when he fired his gun.
When FOX 35 told him the shooting had actually happened on the Florida Turnpike he said, “No. I was in Georgia.”
Donald turned himself in to Orange County deputies. They say he told them a similar story.
Donald made a first appearance before a judge Monday morning. He is being held on $120,000 bond.
