Sanford Police: Man shot stepson during family feud

- Sanford Police say a 71-year-old man was arrested Saturday after shooting his own stepson.

Police say it happened at a home on Summerlin Avenue in Sanford at around 9:45 a.m.

“The next thing I know, I heard gunshots and I got on the phone and dialed 911,” said Juanita Lathrop.

Lathrop’s husband, Thomas Lathrop, is now sitting in jail.

Her 31-year-old son is in critical condition.

“I said, ‘I don't know what went wrong with this man. I don't know what happened to him or what went on,’ but I was no nervous I couldn't even write the report,” Lathrop said.

She says her son was shot twice and described how he tried to get away.

“He was running around the house," she said. "I guess he was running to jump the fence to go around the house."

Lathrop says the three of them live in the home together.

According to the arrest report, she told police her husband seemed to get upset when her son sat down near him on the porch Saturday morning.

“I don't think my husband likes him too well," she said. "That's what the deal was."

Jail records show that Thomas Lathrop is facing an attempted murder charge.

His wife says she stands by her son.

She says she’ll never forgive her husband and plans to testify against him.
