Family rescued from sinking car in Winter Haven

A family of three plunged into a lake on Saturday, but were not injured thanks to good Samaritans coming to their rescue.

Winter Haven police say Henry Saint-Hilaire, 33, his wife and 2-year-old daughter were traveling around Lake Silver when the car's steering locked to the left, causing the car to go into the lake.

Police say a boater on the lake rushed over to the sinking car and helped the family, breaking the driver's side window to get everyone out.

Police say other people stopped to help before the car sank to the bottom of the lake. Thankfully, no one was injured. The family inside the car were taken to Winter Haven Hospital to be checked out.

In a news release, Public Safety Director Charlie Bird said, "This is just one more example of the wonderful citizens in Winter Haven coming to the rescue without hesitation. This family undoubtedly survived this crash because of these good Samaritans who took no regard for their own safety to ensure the family was rescued."
