Family out for bike ride hit by driver

- A young family got the scare of a lifetime, and a local mother is standing up and demanding action. Her children were on a bike ride when someone crashed into them.

Thankfully, the kids survived, but their mother, Sarah Cady, has a message for other drivers.

The father, Justin Cady, says he and his two small children were crossing the intersection at State Road 434 and Winding Hollow Boulevard. They say a distracted driver nearly cost them their lives.

Justin and his two small children, Madison and Lucas, were crossing the intersection around 9:30 a.m. on Saturday.

“I start yelling just to get his attention. He realizes what's going on with barely enough time to hit the brakes. He hits the trailer, flips it on its side. He came to a stop at the same time,” Justin said.

Amazingly, the father was no hurt and his kids only suffered a few bruises, but it was a terrifying day for his wife, Sarah, who got a text message from a friend saying she saw her husband and kids in the street surrounded by police and paramedics.

“All of yesterday I just cried,” Sarah said, “because that guy could have ruined my life.”

Sarah says her life flashed before her eyes.

“You live in your little bubble and never feel like that could be you. I feel like that very well could have been me," she said.

Hardest hit though, was Justin’s $3,000 bicycle and the trailer he was carrying his children in. The trailer's wheel and axle are bent and the whole thing will have to be replaced, a cost of around $350.

But, it's a small price to pay for having his family safe. They have a message for anyone who gets behind the wheel: That it's not just you on the road.

“I just wish people would pay more attention,” Sarah said.

“If you're going from point A to point B in your car, that's task number one,” Justin said. “Drive your vehicle.”

They say the driver was very apologetic and they haven't decided yet whether to press charges.

Winter Springs Police are investigating the incident.

Little Madison says now she's scared to ride behind her father in the bicycle trailer.
