ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. - An Orange County deputy shot and killed and armed man Tuesday night in Orlando.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Office says Deputy Richard Nye pulled over a car for speeding around 9:30 pm Tuesday.
The driver said that a family member was suicidal.
OCSO says Nye and several other deputies followed the individual to a home on Marsh Lilly Drive to check on the family member.
When they arrived at the house no one was inside.
Deputies say they found William Charbonneau holding a shotgun in the backyard.
Deputies say that Charbonneau ignored their commands, and several shots were fired by Deputy Nye.
Charbonneau was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Two other deputies were on scene at the time, Deputy Nathan Alequin and Deputy Kathleen Perez-Thomas, who is being trained.
Deputies say that Charbonneau has a history of suicide attempts.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting.
All three deputies are aon administrative leave for at least one week, which is standard procedure any time a law enforcement officer is involved in a shooting.
Deputy Nye has been with the department since 2007.
