Deputy, man injured after struggle with gun following accident

ORLANDO -- An Orange County Sheriff's deputy is recovering from his injuries after a struggle with a man.  Investigators say the off-duty deputy was driving his personal car and was involved in a minor accident Saturday night.

Deputies say the driver of the other car involved in the accident took off.  The off-duty deputy followed, caught up, and approached him along Consulate Drive.

Investigators say the off-duty deputy identified himself as a law enforcement officer.  Deputies say the man charged at the deputy, going after his gun.  During a struggle, the gun went off.  The off-duty deputy suffered minor injuries after the discharge.

Investigators say the man ran back to his car and left the scene.  A deputy in the area tried to stop the car along South Orange Blossom Trail, before he crashed into another car, and ran from the scene.

Hours later, investigators say the man involved in the accident and struggle with the off-duty deputy showed up at Dr. Phillips Hospital with a gunshot wound.  He is being treated at the hospital.

Investigators have not released the names of those involved.  The Florida Department of Law Enforcement was contacted to take over the investigation.
