ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - Two people are in critical condition after they were injured in a deputy-involved shooting in a Pine Hills neighborhood on Monday, the Orange County Sheriff's Office said.
Deputies were in the area of Karl Street when they heard screaming from a nearby house. When they arrived on scene, they said they saw a woman being stabbed by a man in the front yard of the home. The deputy asked the suspect to drop the knife, but they said he refused, so the deputy shot the man.
"He was giving that subject instructions to drop the knife; he failed to comply with the deputies instructions and the deputy shot him," said Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings during a news conference. "It’s clear to me that the deputy was in the right place at the right time."
Demings said the deputy was not injured, but the man and woman -- a couple in their 20s who have a child together, according to the sheriff -- were rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.
"More than likely, if that deputy had not been two doors down or so, that woman may not have survived this incident," Sheriff Demings added.
