Deputies: Suspect in attempted robbery hides in pond, pretends to be fishing

- Volusia County deputies said Sean Torres, 29, was taken into custody after attempting to rob a Dollar General store in Deltona.

Deputies said they were called to the Family Dollar at 951 Doyle Road around 8:36 p.m. Saturday for a report of a robbery.

When they arrived at the store, the clerk told deputies a man with a shirt on his head and a tattoo that said "Loyalty" on his stomach, came in and demanded money, officials said.

Deputies said when the clerk said no, the man, later identified as Torres, reached to his shorts and threatened to shoot the clerk before running off without any money.

While deputies were conducting their search by ground and by air, the chopper spotted a person near the edge of a pond near the store, officials said.

Torres went into the water, up to his neck, and told deputies that he was just fishing and that his pole was in the water.  He attempted to thwart deputies by telling them the bad guy ran away.

Deputies said Torres surrendered and told them he did not want to get bit by the K-9.  Deputies said he had the same tattoo the clerk saw and he was positively identified.

After Torres was put into a patrol car, he started to shout, threw himself against the door, kicked at the doors and damaged the vehicle, deputies said.

Torres was taken to the Volusia County Jail.
