Polk Co. teen's body found, died trying to save sister

- Polk County deputies were searching for a teen who went missing in the Peace River Saturday after he jumped into the water to save his sister.

Deputies said they searched the river for Austin Welch, 18, by boat and by dive team, on Sunday.

Welch was on the river with his mother, Barbara Engles, 35, and his sister, Crystal Droze, 11, on Saturday, deputies said.

Droze was on the dock fishing when she lost her footing and fell into the water.  Welch and Engles both jumped in to save her but deputies said the water was deep and the current was running fast.

Droze was saved, but deputies said on Saturday they were unable to find Welch.

Just after noon on Sunday, Welch's body was found under debris where he was trapped, deputies said.

Sheriff Grady Judd responded to the river Sunday morning to help with the search effort.
