While Rene Burgos was sitting in jail Tuesday night charged with suspicion of carjacking, kidnapping fales imprisonment and grand theft auto, across town 80 year old Herbert Doktor was laying in the hospital hoping he’s strong enough for surgery.
Doktor’s daughter Melissa sat at his bedside. “He has a small bleed in his brain with a large hematoma on his head and a broken hip and a broken finger,” said Melissa Doktor.
Seminole County Sheriffs deputies say Doktor was being picked up at his home in a special Lynx bus for his Monday dialysis appointment when Burgos carjacked the bus. “The bus driver had just gotten him on the bus and he wasn’t strapped in and the guy jumped on the bus,” said Melissa. According to investigators, Burgos took off "driving in a reckless manner" with the bus driver and Doktor still inside. “My dad went out of the wheelchair and on his face,” said Melissa.
Melissa says she and her husband were on their way home when they saw a fire truck, an ambulance and the bus. “Then I saw my dad’s wheelchair and I saw him getting wheeled off the bus. The look on my dad’s face, he was just so frightened and scared and he was bleeding everywhere. Literally when I saw that, I jumped out of my truck while it was still going to get to my dad,” said Melissa.
She says doctors want surgically repair her father’s hip tomorrow, problem is between the brain bleed, his kidney issues the doc’s aren’t sure he’s strong enough. “His heart is not up to par, if they can’t do the surgery, then he’ll be in the wheelchair permanently. If he’s in there permanently, that’s going to kill him,” said Melissa. Tonight, she’s got a question for Burgos, “Why??? What is your problem? How could you do this to a disabled person on a bus, better yet, why would you steal a disability bus?” said Melissa.
Burgos is due back in court March 8th.
