ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - The Orange County Sheriff's Office arrested five people over the weekend in connection with illegal ATV activity on the Florida Turnpike.
Deputies released chopper video showing a group of ATV riders using the center median to change directions and make a U-turn.
Deputies say one ATV rider clipped an oncoming car, sending the car off the roadway into construction barriers on the shoulder of the road.
In a news release, the sheriff's office wrote:
"The Orange County Sheriff’s Office is aware of the dangers these activities pose to the public. Through investigative means, we determined this illicit activity was going to take place throughout Orange County this past weekend. Please note Orange County is not immune to this activity as it is nationwide problem. We established surveillance platforms to identify and apprehend subjects participating in this reckless activity. Due to the type of vehicles operated by these individuals, it is easier for them to flee and elude our apprehension efforts and thus making it difficult to identify the driver. Our deputies, along with other law enforcement agencies, work diligently to stop this illegal activity which puts the public in imminent danger. We will not tolerate this activity and are putting our utmost effort towards minimizing it."
The sheriff's office is encouraging the public to call 911 if they see this type of activity.
