Daycare worker accused of leaving child in hot van in Leesburg

- Leesburg Police are accusing 55-year-old daycare worker Cheryl Hannah, of Leesburg, of leaving a 3-year-old boy in a hot van Friday in a Leesburg mall parking lot.

“She seems very nice, and everything,” said Hannah’s neighbor, George Pendola, told Fox 35. “ It’s just a shocker.”

Monday, her neighbors were buzzing about it. “She seems like a responsible person,” neighbor, James Buckmon told Fox 35. “Sometimes, accidents do happen.”

Leesburg police previously told Fox 35 it looked very clear to officers on scene Friday, that it was an accident..
While she, other daycare workers, and a group of children were at the ViaPort Mall's theater in Leesburg, watching a morning movie, another woman saw the boy crying in the van.

The woman got him out of the hot, unlocked van and told police he was sweating profusely, crying uncontrollably, and soiled himself. The police report said, inside the van, the temperature reached 117 degrees.

“I just thought it was a shame,” Pendola explained. “Because this is not the first time I heard about it. It won’t be the last.”

Hannah’s out of jail Monday, and is facing a misdemeanor charge.

Fox 35 knocked on her door to hear from her, but got no answer.

Police said the group of children came from the New Life Center Ministries Daycare in Wildwood.

Fox 35 knocked on the door seeking answers from the daycare. A woman who answered the door, but didn’t identify herself, told Fox 35, “we have no comment.”

In the meantime, Hannah’s neighbors are thinking about the child. “I hope they get well soon,” Buckmon said. “And they forgiver her for the mistake she had made.”

Leesburg Police spokesperson, Lieutenant Joe Iozzi, told Fox 35 they’ve had no contact with the boy’s family, but as far as they know, they assume the child is doing OK on Monday.
