Children find body in Daytona Beach park

Daytona Beach police said several children walking through a local park discovered a body laying not far from the baseball fields.

Police Chief Craig Capri said the group discovered the body at the Derbyshire Sports Complex on Sunday afternoon and called police at about 2 p.m.

Detectives located the body of a 31-year-old woman in a large field at the Derbyshire Recreation Area.

"The body was out in the open - it wasn't concealed - it wasn't hidden, so we figure if it was during the week someone would have found it a lot sooner,” said Chief Capri, who says the park is usually fairly empty on Sundays.

According to a release from the department, the body had signs of trauma.

Capri said there doesn’t appear to be a danger to the public.

He believes whoever dumped the body came to the park to do whatever they did.

Officers are investigating the incident as a homicide and are offering a reward for information leading to an arrest.

According to a police press release, anyone with information can text “CRIMES” (274637) with a cellphone, or log on to www.dbpd.us and click on Anonymous Web Tips.

Chief Capri said the department is also offering trauma counseling to the children who discovered the body.

"We want to make sure they're OK,” he said, “because it is a traumatic experience coming across a dead body."
