Babysitter charged with manslaughter out of jail

- A babysitter arrested for the shooting death of his 6-year-old niece is out of jail as of Thursday morning.

35-year-old Erik Williams was originally arrested on child neglect charges and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon.

Sanford Police say on March 1st, 6-year-old Aletha Burke died after shooting herself with a gun, which she found under a couch. Police say Williams was the only adult in the home at the time and he admitted to leaving his gun unsecure.

Investigators say he told them that Burke shot herself, but detectives have determined that cannot be the case. "It was physically impossible for the juvenile to have fired the weapon and self inflicted that gunshot wound which fatally killed her." said Sanford Police spokesperson Bianca Gillett.

Williams was arrested again on Wednesday on manslaughter charges and was bonded out Wednesday night. Williams is scheduled to be back in court on May 31.
