Schools come together to aid student with rare medical condition

- Several Seminole County schools are getting together to help a lacrosse student fight a rare medical condition.

Lake Mary Preparatory High School seniors Ashyln Witzke & Abby Harley personally know Trinity High School senior John Michael Night, who suffered a brainstem stroke. It left him with a rare medical condition known as Locked-in Syndrome.

The Lacrosse player is paralyzed from the neck down and has a long road to recovery. He suffered the brain stem stroke in December. Two weeks before his stroke, he signed a scholarship to play D1 lacrosse at Mercer University.

Witzke & Harley organized a raffle and a bake sale this week, helping raise about a $1,000. The school also had a "dress down" Friday where students paid $2 to not wear their uniform and were encouraged to wear purple to support John Michael.

Several other Seminole County schools have joined in to help too. More than $14,000 has been raised

Lake Mary Preparatory held a short assembly Friday morning to talk about how much has been raised and Saturday's walk-a-thon. It starts at 7pm at Lake Mary Prep located at 650 Rantoul Lane in Lake Mary.
