- A Florida Highway Patrol trooper is in serious condition after troopers said his patrol car was hit by an SUV on I-4 in Volusia County, trapping him inside early Thursday morning.

Trooper Jay Spencer was trapped until the fire department cut him out, FHP said.

The crash happened at 12:30 a.m. on mile marker 118.

Both Spencer, 48, and the driver of the SUV that hit him, 31-year-old Ryan Thompson of Daytona Beach, were taken to Halifax Medical Center.
