Crews repave I-95 northbound after fiery Volusia crash

Cell phone video shows the flames and heavy smoke billowing into the sky right after troopers say a semi- truck hit a guard rail and caught fire on I-95 northbound, right under the I4 overpass.

“The flames were touching the top of the bridge almost like curling over it, the smoke looked like it was 200 feet high it was a serious fire, very serious fire,” said Conor Dowd who lives nearby.

Dowd shot the video  from his  Iphone after  he heard the semi-truck crash  on its  route from  Miami to Missouri. DOT cameras also caught the flames an heavy smoke.

“We heard the explosion it was super loud, actually my roommate was in the building, and he even heard it it was that loud it shook the entire building, Dowd said.

At one point the crash shut traffic down in both direction on I-95 causing major backups,  the I-4 overpass  to Belville Road was also shut down for a few hours while it was inspected for any damage then later reopened .

I-95 was northbound remains closed  as crews work to repave nearly 450 feet of roadway  that was damaged during the fire.

“Everybody depends on the highway, it’s i-95 it runs through the whole east coast so we all need it to start working to get everything moving,” said Alberto A

Fortunately the 32 year old truck driver from Virginia only suffered minor injuries, officials estimate the stretch of I-95 northbound will re-open around 2:00am Thursday morning.
