GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - Gainesville police say a 14-year-old boy is suspected of sexually battering a University of Florida student at an apartment complex.
Officers say on Wednesday they responded to the Tivoli Apartments near campus.
A woman reported that she was working out in the gym at the apartment complex when someone knocked on the door.
Police say after letting the person in, he attacked the woman.
The incident left residents rattled.
“We’re on edge so we didn’t leave after dark, and if we did, we left in groups,” said Nathassia Castilhos, who lives at the apartment complex.
Police say they put the place under surveillance Saturday night and spotted two boys walking around the buildings and trying to hide in the shadows.
According to a news release from investigators, detectives “conducted interviews of the two boys following their arrest where evidence and statements confirmed that the 14-year-old was allegedly responsible for the rape.”
Police say the teen is also suspected in burglaries around the area and that he was starting to break into an apartment when they caught him.
Investigators say the suspect’s 13-year-old brother is facing an attempted burglary charge in an unrelated case.
