DeBary mayor planning raft trip from Cuba to US

FOX 35 News at 10 p.m.

- The mayor of DeBary is getting ready for an adventure as he plans to take a small raft from Cuba to Florida.

Mayor Clint Johnson is no stranger to big trips and projects highlighting hot-button issues.  Last year he rode a bicycle 800 miles from Tallahassee to Key West to promote nature trails.

In about a month he plans to fly to Cuba and then build a raft out of basic supplies and then row himself back to Florida.  The 90 mile trek could take a few days, or a few weeks, depending on the conditions. "I want to experience what it's like to come here on a raft. you hear about it online, it's almost entirely unreported," Mayor Clint Johnson said. "I want to know what the men, women and children go through to get here."

Mayor Johnson will have two GPS devices that will tell authorities where he is and he will even be able to text.  He also plans on having a GoPro camera and a selfie stick to document his journey.

Over the next few weeks he plans to practice in Lake Monroe, the ocean, and Lake Okeechobee.
