ORLANDO, Fla. (FOX 35 WOFL) - The Wall Street Journal is looking at federal data when it comes to bike safety. They found that Florida is the most dangerous state and the numbers are scary.
According to the report, 840 bicyclists died in crashes nationwide in 2016. That's the most since 1991. Here in Florida, there is more than six deaths per 100,00 people. That is nearly 60% higher than the next closest state. Last year, 116 cyclists died in Florida, which is the lowest since 2010.
Data through last Sunday shows that there has already been 95 deaths in 2018 alone. This puts the state on pace for 130 this year.
According to the Wall Street Journal, Pinellas County is ranked as the most dangerous place in the country to ride a bike and Tampa leads all U.S. metro areas in bike deaths.
Florida Transportation officials are making several efforts to improve safety. The Florida Department of Transportation has already changed the standard width for bike lanes from four feet to seven feet. Last year, the agency also started the 'Best Foot Forward Campaign' aimed at bike safety, education, and enforcement.
