FOX Beat: 'The Danish Girl' director Tom Hooper

Lili Elbe was a Danish transgender woman and one of the first recipients of sex reassignment surgery. The new film, 'The Danish Girl,' follows her life as she prepares to undergo surgery.

FOX 5’s Kevin McCarthy sat down with Oscar-winning director Tom Hooper to discuss the film and to talk about how, coincidently, the film’s subject matter is now in the news.

"It’s so exciting for me that this story I've cared about for so long will finally find an audience," Hooper told McCarthy. He said that early in the process the film’s subject matter had been taboo. But recently, especially following the story of Kaitlyn Jenner, the subject matter became more popular.

Hooper said audiences have been very receptive to the film in screenings. "Bring a box of tissues because you’re going to be in for an emotional journey," Hooper said.
