Is a hot dog a sandwich? Ponder this question (again) on National Hot Dog Day

- The hot dog is one of America's favorite foods-- but is it a sandwich? That's a question that often ends in a heated debate, so in honor of National Hot Dog Day, we thought we'd bring it up. You know, again.

Are you hungry yet?

THE DEFINITION OF "SANDWICH"

First things first: let's check the definition. According to Merriam-Webster, a sandwich is defined as " two or more slices of bread or a split roll having a filling in between."

A hot dog has bread. And in between that bread, there's filling. This seems much easier than you thought, doesn't it?

Earlier this year, Merriam-Webster even tried to settle the debate once and for all with this infamous tweet, proclaiming that indeed, a hot dog IS a sandwich.

But sandwich purists were not at all convinced. The National Hot Dog and Sausage Council (yes, it exists) released an official statement, saying in part, "Limiting the hot dog's significance by saying 'it's just a sandwich' is like calling the Dalai Lama 'just a guy.'"

Really?

WHAT SAY YOU?

We wanted the real answer, so of course, we asked you (or more specifically, we asked Twitter). In our officially unofficial poll that asked the question, "Is a hot dog a sandwich?" 23 percent of those who answered said yes.... but a whopping 77 percent said absolutely not.

So, is it? Tell us what you think on our Facebook page.

Oh, and have a very happy National Hot Dog (sandwich?) Day!
