Tom Johnson

Tom Johnson is a multi-Emmy™ Award Winning journalist at FOX 35 News.  He co-anchors FOX 35 News on Saturday and Sunday evenings and is a special projects reporter during the week.

Tom spent his first 5 years in Central Florida co-anchoring FOX 35's morning newscast.  He is a TV news and sports veteran with 28 years of experience.  He came to FOX 35 in September 2003 after nearly two years at WOIO-TV (Cleveland) where he anchored both news and sports and also hit the streets as a news reporter.  Before that Tom anchored the morning news at WSPA-TV (Upstate SC).  Tom also anchored and reported news and sports at WIS-TV (Columbia, SC), WJCL-TV (Savannah) and began his career at WSAV-TV (Savannah) in 1990.

Before that first job in Savannah, Tom attended the prestigious Henry W. Grady College of Journalism at the University of Georgia from 1986-1990.  He holds a Bachelor's degree in Broadcast News Journalism.

Tom has covered a lot of major news stories in his career including: the space shuttle fleet's Return to Space in 2005; Central Florida's "Summer of Storms" in 2004; the trial of Susan Smith in Union, SC; the 1994 crash of a US Air jet in Charlotte, NC and the bomb blast at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. He was actually in Centennial Olympic Park when the bombing happened and eventually covered the search for bomber Eric Rudolph in the mountains of North Carolina.

Tom has also covered a lot of major sports stories and teams.  They include: 11 Daytona 500's; the 2008-2009 Orlando Magic run to the NBA Finals; the 2012 NBA All-Star game in Orlando; the Florida Gators playing in the 2009 BCS National Championship game; the Cleveland Indians, the Cleveland Browns and LeBron James' rise to NBA superstardom from an Akron, OH high school; the Atlanta Braves; the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games; the Georgia Bulldogs and South Carolina Gamecocks.

Tom has been honored for his work with 5 Emmy™ Awards, 11 Emmy nominations and nearly a dozen other awards. Most recently he won a 2016 Suncoast Emmy™ Award for human interest reporting. In 2006 Tom won a Suncoast Emmy™ Award for education reporting at FOX 35. And in 2005 he won a prestigious Edward R. Murrow Award for feature reporting at FOX 35.

In his spare time, Tom loves to read and is a RABID football fan.  He closely follows the Georgia Bulldogs and Washington Redskins.  Tom is married with two young sons.  He and his family are overjoyed to call Central Florida home!
